Following up on last post’s eco-friendly online stores, I wanted to share in more depth about the Lush products I’ve tried and what I still use. For reference I have sometimes-sensitive, combo skin (dry and oily) and uneven skin tone.
In my 20’s, I avoided the Lush store in the mall because my social anxiety didn’t match with in-store demos, and the few products I did try seemed overpriced for what they were.
Let me tell you: I was WRONG. (as I’m sure I was about a lot things in my 20s)
Yes, there are in-store demos but I’ve embraced them.
And yes the prices are higher than a drugstore but you’re paying for their ethical business practices, natural products, and eco-conscious packaging.
Basically, Lush is good for the planet, your body, and society. I’ve been a full convert for just under a year now and these are the products that did it for me:
1. Face Moisturizer
Last March my California skin and my California face moisturizer weren’t cutting it in the PNW late-winter weather and my face was so dry. Simultaneously I was wanting to reduce the plastic in my bathroom, so I decided that while I was trying something new, I would try something in a reusable package as well.
Lush and I have been in a committed relationship ever since.
The sales associate listened to my woes and suggested 2 options: their starter face moisturizer Imperialis and a heavier option, Skin Drink. I opted for a full size of the safer option in Imperialis and a sample of Skin Drink which ended up being the right choice.
I’ve since moved on to Celestial and have started adding a pump of straight argan oil for extra moisture as needed.
I did see they now have an argan oil naked facial oil bar which will be my next purchase after my argan oil bottle is done.
2. Bath Bombs
If you know one thing about Lush, it’s probably their famous bath bombs.
And for the most part, they have been a hit in our house. As with all Lush products, some of the scents can be intense but we’ve survived.
There are all kinds of different types of bath bombs with different qualities, it’s an adventure just shopping for bath bombs if nothing else. They’re package free if you buy individually in-store!
There are also loads of different pre-packaged gifts that are adorable and usually wrapped in reusable wrapping cloth.
3. Face/body scrubs
I’ve tried a few of their face/body scrubs over the past year and have enjoyed them all:
- Mask of Magnaminty
- Cup o’ Coffee
- Ocean Salt
I highly recommend all 3 of these. Ocean Salt is strictly a shower scrub but the other 2 can be used as a scrub/mask combo for face or body which is a quick and fun self-care moment before a weekend shower.
4. Fresh Face Mask
[Lush] take[s] back and reuse[s] the little black plastic tub product containers- and for every 5 you return you get a FREE fresh face mask.
If you’ve ever been in a lush store, these are in the fancy display of colorful goop in metal bowls. As the name suggests, fresh face masks are made with fresh ingredients and must be used within a week or so of them being made.
My top favorite part about lush, and there are many, is that they take back and reuse the little black plastic tub product containers- and for every 5 you return you get a FREE fresh face mask. This is why I have tried a number of these wonderful masks:
- Don’t Look at Me– lemony blue bliss
- Oatifix– smells like banana bread
- Brazened Honey– glowy clay mask
I’ve loved them all and want to try the others too. Fresh face masks are a wonderful self-care indulgence. And if you get a free one for returning containers then it feels even better when you use the mask.
This is the opposite of Phoebe’s trying to find a selfless act. Why not reward yourself for helping save the planet one beauty product container at a time?
5. Shaving Cream
I use D’Fluff to shave my legs and it’s d’lightful.
This is simply another awesome product that WORKS but is also good for your body and the planet.
It’s pink and fluffy as the name suggests. It smells delicious from the strawberries in the formula.
I didn’t know until reading the description again just now that it works even better if you let it sit on the shave area for a bit before shaving. I’ll have to try that next time.
Other Lush products currently in my house, slowly taking over:
- Joe’s shampoo bar: Seanik he doesn’t want fluffy hair and this works for him. I initially took him into the store so a sales associate could help him and now I can just buy it for him as needed.
- face toner: Breath of Fresh Air
- conditioner bar: Big I don’t want my conditioner to weigh down my thin hair and this is great.
- lotion bar: Little Pot of Energy my most recent purchase and current obsession
- lotion: Charity Pot
- massage bar: Wiccy Magic Muscles
- lip balm: Honey Trap and Whipstick (chocolate orange!)
- lip scrub: honey
- mouthwash tablets: Creme de menthe (great to have in your desk)
- henna hair dye: Brun I finally bought it because I’ve always wanted to try it but haven’t done it yet. Have you ever dyed your hair with henna?
